Investigating the Indies #7: Cameo Colours Lacquers

November 28th, 2012
Hello Berry Patch!  It’s time for my 7th Indie interview, and this time it’s with another avid Fan Foto Friday contributor.  Cameo from Cameo Colours Lacquers is just plain awesome.  She has a wide range of glitter packed polishes to choose from in her Etsy shop, and her beautiful polishes all have entertaining names like “Unicorn Farts” and “Dream House Sold Separately”.  I have always looked forward to seeing what polish she will wear each week when she shares them on my Facebook page, so it’s really cool to get the chance to pick her brain and own some of her polishes myself.  Enjoy!
1.  First of all, what are you wearing on your fingernails and/or toenails right now?
  • I’m wearing one of my newer polishes on my fingernails right now, November Rayne. It’s a blue jelly jam packed with holographic silver short slice glitter…GORGEOUS!  My toenails are bare, as they most always are after sandal weather has passed.

Cameo Colours Lacquers ~ November Rayne

2.  What made you get into the business of making nail polish?
  • The inability to find the perfect ruby slippers nail polish!  Nothing I found was doing it for me, so I started researching what I would need to make my own, and ordering a bit at a time.  Once I made it, everyone I knew (and everyone who saw it) wanted a bottle of their own…And Cameo Colours Lacquers was born!
3.  What would you say inspires you the most when creating new polishes?
  • I take a lot of inspiration from movies, music and books that I love, my family and friends, random things that strike me funny, as well as the glitters and pigments themselves.  So often I get new glitter, and as soon as I see it in person the polish idea starts forming.  I jot down the idea and tuck it aside for after I’ve tested the glitters, haha!
4.  Which of your polishes do you consider to be your greatest success?
  • Hmm, that’s a tough one! Sales end up pretty evenly distributed among my various polishes.  I’d say it may be a toss-up between Unicorn Farts and my Labyrinth collection.  Unicorn Farts was commissioned by my best friend of 21 years, who wanted a linear holographic base with lots of multi-colored glitter. The Labyrinth collection (which is still unfinished, by the way) is inspired by my all-time favorite movie, and it turns out a LOT of other people love it as well!
5.  We all know that perfection doesn’t happen overnight, so can you describe one of your biggest flops?
  • The first formulation of my OZ inspired polish for the Tin Man, Empty Shell No More.  It didn’t match the idea in my head at all! Instead of being a sheer sparkly silver with red hearts floating in it, it turned out a gloopy mess, the silver was too dense and you could barely see the hearts.  I’m assured that it wasn’t really THAT bad, but we are all our own worst critics, and I’m a bit of a perfectionist!
6.  What is one thing our readers would be surprised to know about your creative process?
  • I sit down at my workstation, pop in my earbuds, and get so absorbed that I lose track of time and forget to eat…Whoops! I’m reminded when my blood sugar crashes and I start getting the shakes.  Luckily my children are at school, so I don’t forget to feed them too, although once I was nearly late picking them up!
7.  What are your hopes for the Cameo Colours Lacquers brand in the next 5 years?
  • I’d love to still be doing this, but on a larger scale.  An assistant would be nice…And my sister really wants to be my shipping department, haha!
8.  Now for a tough, slightly controversial question: What are your feelings about Indie polishes being resold on eBay?
  • I think that if you buy a polish and end up not being absolutely smitten, by all means, you should be able to re-sell it.  I think selling it for a huge amount over what you paid for it is a bit shady, because it’s not as though you personally put in the time and effort to create it…But people have the option of not buying it as well.  I suppose that puts me middle of the road on this issue.
9.  Ok enough with the serious questions!  If you were stranded on a deserted island and could on have 3 polishes with you, what would they be and why (color names and brands please)?
  • Aside from my Take It Off basecoat, Gelous, and a quick dry topcoat, haha…
  • 1. Enchanted Polish – Across the Universe, because I love it so, AND it’s my favorite Beatles song.  I can’t wear it without walking around singing the song constantly!
  • 2. My own Click Three Times, because I can just sit around and stare at my fingernails for ages when I’m wearing that!
  • 3. Pretty & Polished – Dolli-Pop, because it’d give me something fun to do, dip my hand in the water and watch it change, back and forth, haha.
10.  And finally, if you were asked to create a berry-colored polish and give it a berry-themed name, what would you call it?
  • I already have a berry polish that my oldest daughter inspired me to make…Sparkleberry Punch!  It’s a medium bright pink creme jelly with lots of berry-colored matte glitters and silver holographic sparkle. :)

Yay, another great interview in the bag.  It seems like creating polish because you can’t find a color you want is a typical (and logical) way to start.  And how great is it that she already has a Berry themed polish?  I really like the idea that she is inspired by things she thinks are funny :)  Well, if you don’t have any Cameo Colours Lacquers in your collection (or even if you do, haha) make sure to head on over to her Etsy shop ~ http://www.etsy.com/shop/CameoColoursLacquers?page=1 ~ and stock up for the Holidays (she has some great Christmas-y polishes!).  She also has a Facebook page where you can keep up to date on all her latest creations.  I will also make sure to add her to my Links tab.  And be checking my blog in the next couple weeks because I will be reviewing one of her polishes and hosting a Cameo Colours Lacquers polish giveaway!

The Traveling Polish!

The Traveling Polish with a Crested Gecko!

The Traveling Polish.

Hello Berry Patch and sorry for the hiatus last week.  Today I have something really interesting to share with you.  I am part of a Facebook group called “The Traveling Polish”.  It’s basically a group of polish lovers that are sharing one indie polish all around the world.  I am the 13th person to receive this polish and it’s been everywhere from the Netherlands, to Singapore to Florida!  I think it’s a super cool concept that was started by Carrie S. of Sassy Lacquer.  If you would like to see more pictures of all the adventures this polish had with me, check out this Facebook Album.

To create my manicure with this polish, I started by adding one layer of OPI’s Alpine Snow to all my nails (except for my ring fingers).  After that I added 3 coats of the Traveling Polish on top of the white creme.  The Traveling Polish is a purple jelly filled with purple and holo micro glitter.  It applied very nicely, but definitely benefitted from the OPI undies, haha.  On my ring finger I added two coats of Zoya’s Zuza from this Summer’s Surf Collection, which is a gorgeous turquoise packed with shimmer. I was  amazed at how opaque this polish was with just one coat and how well it applied.  I really love this polish and would highly recommend it.  And then to give this manicure a little more umph, I used a dotting tool to add a row of dots on all the tips with the contrasting colors.

In terms of wear, Zoya Zuza did amazingly well.  I left it without a top coat for a couple days (because I kept being too busy to add the dots) and I had no chips at all – but I definitely couldn’t say the same for the Traveler.  I did end up having to totally re-do some of my nails with The Traveler (but that was my bad for not sealing it with a topcoat sooner).  But even after the re-do and the top coat, The Traveler still had chipping issues after a few days.  But I had a really cool experience with this unique polish and group :)

Halloween Contest Participants ’12

November 14th, 2012

1st Place Winner – The Polished Mommy

2nd Place Winner – Tips and Topcoat

Hello Berry Patch!  Today I am celebrating ALL of the amazing participants in my Halloween nail art contest :)  I know I can’t give a prize to everyone who enters, but I can give all of them some recognition.  The first and second place participants do have more of a feature on this post, but if you would like to know who created any of the other gruesomely fantastic manicures, make sure to check out the Facebook Album I have for them (you can leave them some love there as well).  Once again this was a super hard decision because there were so many great interpretations of the Halloween theme.  And as always, I was truly inspired by this group of contest entries!

Our 1st place winner was Francine from the blog The Polished Mommy!  I was amazed by how far she took her zombie themed “Naaaaiils” manicure.  I was glad to find out that those were not her real nails, haha because this manicure looks painful.  I thought it was really cool that she didn’t stop just with the nails, she went for the full effect by even adding some makeup to the skin around her nails.  This was true commitment to a look.  So congratulations again Francine, these were Halloween nails in one of the most literal interpretations possible!

“Naked” Leopard Print ~ Rescue Beauty Lounge & Nicole by OPI

November 4th, 2012

All pictures are in natural light.

Nicole by OPI Nicole’s Nickel, Rescue Beauty Lounge Aqua Lilly and Clear Pink

Hello Berry Patch!  I orignally thought I would have one more Halloween manicure to share with you today, but it turns out that I dressed up as one of my friends and she suggested that to complete the look, I leave on an old chipped manicure because that’s how her nails tend to look, haha.  So since my next manicure was technically done in November, I decided to move on from the Halloween theme and on to something I have been meaning to try for a while.  I’ve seen the “naked” base leopard print nails in several different places over the past year, so I don’t have anyone to specifically credit for my inspiration.

I just recently got Rescue Beauty Lounge’s Clear Pink, which is a super sheer blush color.  I had been wanting a polish that will make my nails feel like they have polish on but not really look like it, and this polish does the trick.  Now I did apply two coats, and noticed that it gave the whites of my nails a slight yellowish tint, it’s not super noticeable, but if you are going for the totally naked look, you should probably stick with one coat.  Then I used a dotting tool to apply little random splotches of Nicole by OPI’s Nicole’s Nickel which is packed with tons of small blackish-silver glitter that has a teal shimmer to it in the bottle.  I think I used too small an amount of this polish to really have any chance of seeing that teal color change on my nails, but I choose this polish for the inside dots of my leopard print because I wanted to use a glitter, I need needed a densely packed glitter.  For the little outer rings of the leopard print I went with Rescue Beauty Lounge’s Aqua Lilly, which is a a gorgeous light teal that has a hint of pink shimmer in it.  The pink shimmer in this polish is so awesome, and even with the small amount I used, I could still capture the pink in the sun!  And then I finished it off with some Seche Vite top coat.

I’m pretty happy with the way this manicure turned out and the way it’s wearing.  I’ve only had it on for a few days now, but from what I can tell, the free edge is holding up well.  And one of the great things about using a sheer nude base, it that if I do get  any chips, it won’t really be noticeable!  One thing I find difficult about doing leopard print, is that I find that I have a hard time keeping the spots random enough, haha.  But I am really enjoying the pop pf color on my nails as well as being able to see a bit of my natural nail tip coming through.

Blogger Bio Series #10: Peace Love Lacquer

October 31st, 2012

Wow Berry Patch!  Can you believe this already my 10th Blogger interview?!  I am so glad that this series has been a success and that there are so many awesome nail bloggers out there willing to participate :)  So today I interviewed Kelly of Peace Love Lacquer for you.  Her blog posts are always so enthusiastic – you can tell she really enjoys what she’s doing here.  And she participates in lots of great blogger challenges, which allow her to create a lot of interesting manis, and she creates them often.  And you will also get a nice mix of big brand and indie polish reviews.  And since this is a Halloween post and Kelly is participating in a Halloween blogger challenge, she sent in a lot of awesome Halloween themed manis to include in this post!  So make sure that you head over to her blog and check it out!  With out further ado – here is her interview (I did not mean for that to rhyme, haha).

1. First of all, what are you wearing on your toes and/or fingernails right now?

  • My toes have Zoya Kimber, and desperately need to be changed! Im currently rocking my spider mani featuring Zoya Eliza and 365 Days of Color Black Flame Candle

2. Take us back to the beginning – how did you first start wearing nail polish consistently?

  • I’ve been painting my toes for AGES. I decided it wasn’t worth paying someone to do it, so I bought everything I needed to do basic doticures. It wasnt until I discovered fast drying top coats that I started doing my fingers. Now I’m naked without polish! It is very rare that I leave the house without it!

 3. How did you decide to start a nail polish blog?

  • My co-workers and family are the ones that talked me into blogging. My co-workers just wanted to see tutorials on how I did some of them and my family because they were sick of missing my cool manis if they didn’t see me when I was wearing it!

4. How do you friends and family respond to the size your nail polish collection obviously has to be as a blogger?

  • Ummmmmmmmmmmmm, most of them haven’t never seen it! Hahaha! The few that have, are usually so shocked all they can say is “wow.” To which my hubby usually responds “yea, this is what I deal with.” lmao!

5. What is the funniest or most interesting way a stranger has reacted to one of your manicures?

  • The usual reaction is asking how long it took. And usually some sort of “I would never have the patience for that.” My favorite reaction ever though, would probably be when I was waiting for a haircut. The nail tech walked by and immediately noticed my nails and sat and talked to me for 15 minutes about my nail care regimen. She was so sweet, and said that she wished more of her customers realized that a few minutes a day can really improve the look and health of your nails.

6. What is your favorite nail polish trend, past or present?

  • Anything but crackle… does that count? haha… seriously though, the indie trend has been one of my favorites. My top indie makers would by 365 Days of Color, A-Englands, Whimsical Nail Polish by Pam and Maisie Shine. I love pretty much everything they put out!

7. Do you have a polishing pet peeve you see other polishers doing?

  • Clean-up. Clean-up. Clean-up. Precision q-tips are your friend! :)

8. Please give our readers your favorite nail care tip:

  • Always have a cuticle balm nearby. I literally have like 20. I am currently sitting at my desk looking at 2; plus I have at least one in my purse, on my coffee table, on my nightstand and by the sink in the kitchen and both my master and half-bath… Healthy cuticles mean healthy nails! Plus a 10 minute Olive Oil soak once or twice a week!

9. If you were stranded on a deserted island and could on have 3 polishes with you, what would they be and why (color names and brands please)?

  • Ugh… 3?? That’s like asking me to pick which dog to save if the house is burning down! Haha… If I had a gun to my head and was FORCED to choose, I guess it would be my NerdLacquer Holy Grail, A-Englands Tristam and 365 Days of Color Boouk!

A England Tristam

365 Days of Color Boouk

10. And finally, if you were asked to name a berry-colored polish, what would you call it?

  • Rockin Raspberry

Yay!  I loved reading her answers.  I think it’s great that her family and friends were the ones that encouraged her to start blogging.  And I can definitely relate to her hubby’s response to her nail polish collection, haha.  I have to agree about the clean-up issue being a pet peeve…I mean I have had days where I just felt too tired to clean up right after…but if you are entering a contest or something, it might be worth the extra couple minutes to clean up that manicure :)  Alright, if you would like to see more from Peace Love Lacquer, you can check out her blog at http://peacelovelacquer.blogspot.com/ or you can find it in my Blogs tab.  She also has a Facebook page that you can check out :)  And as always, if you are a blogger who would like to participate or a fan who would like to see a particular blogger interviewed, please email me or comment on this post :)  {My email is listed in the info section of my Facebook page}.

Lyn B Designs ~ Shadow on the Moon

October 28th, 2012

All pictures are in natural light.

Zoya Raven and Lyn B Designs Shadow on the Moon

Hello Berry Patch!  Sorry this is coming to you so late, but I had some poor time management due to Halloween celebrations, haha :P  But I have been wearing a lovely polish made by my last indie interviewee – Lyn B Designs.  It was the perfect color for the month of October because not only is it orange-y, it also comes from a Halloween themed collection.

So I started with two layers of Lyn B Designs Shadow on the Moon, from the Nightmare Begins collection (based on the Nightmare Before Christmas).  I have had a bit of a hard time trying to accurately describe this color.  I would describe it as kind of a dusty orange, but here is the description from the Etsy shop: “A sheer darkened red base with pale pink and pale orange small hexes, microfine silver holographic glitter, and itty bitty gold hexes”.  And those holographic glitters really do give this polish something special.  But I wanted to up the Halloween-ness of this mani, so I used Zoya’s Raven (a black creme) to add some spiderweb accents.  I’m not super happy with the spiderwebs because I just didn’t have a nail art brush thin enough to create lines as thin as I would have liked.  And then I topped everything off with a coat of Seche Vite.

While this color is very unique, I’m not sure it’s one I would have thought to buy on my own.  I love the holographic aspect of it, but orange just isn’t really my color.  And unfortunately for me, this isn’t a very long wearing glitter.  But the second day, I was already getting chips :/  But if you are the type of person who loves to change their polish often, this won’t be a problem.  It applies nicely and I didn’t have to do any fishing for glitter, which is a big plus.  One of the other things I really loved about Lyn B Design polishes, is the bottles!  They are such a unique shape, it really makes them stand out from other indie polishes.  Now if you would like to own one of these cool polishes then enter through the rafflecoptor app below :)

You could win this bottle of Lyn B Designs Basil!

Investigating the Indies #6: Lyn B Designs

October 24th, 2012

Hello Berry Patch!  Today I have another interview with an indie polish creator – Jenna of Lyn B Designs.  Not only does she create beautiful glitter polishes like many other indie makers, she also has a great bunch of shimmery solid colors as well.  And the options seem to be limitless in her shop, there are so many great choices that everyone is bound to find something they like.  And I like that she actually creates “polish lines” – like her Doctor Who or Just Stories lines.  She was a great creator to interview because she really got into the process and gave some well thought out answers.  Enjoy!

1.  First of all, what are you wearing on your fingernails and/or toenails right now?

  • To be honest, there’s nothing on my toes.  I’m lazy when it comes painting my toes.  I don’t really know why, they’re ten little canvases looking for art.  My most recent toe color was OPI It’s My Year.  On my fingers right now I’m wearing Sally Hansen’s Save the Date with a coat of “The Silence” over it.  I really love the combo of the dark shimmery magenta with the iridescent glitters in “The Silence.”

2.  What made you get into the business of making nail polish?

  • I’ve loved polish since I was a little girl and I have a fairly massive collection to prove it.  I lived in a small town and now live in an even smaller one, where finding great polish colors was hard to do.  I got tired of having to settle for the small offering at the local Rite Aid so my need was created.  I didn’t really star my journey until last November when I had a pretty massive cold.  I started messing around with polishes I didn’t like and changing them into something I did.  When I used up all my personal resources for polish I started looking for new sources.  I had heard about TKB earlier in the year and decided to give them a go.  I ordered a few pigments and of course some suspension base.  It took my mom buying me some empty bottles to actually get me listing my creations on Etsy.  I haven’t looked back since.

3.  What would you say inspires you the most when creating new polishes?

  •  There are a few things people should know about me first.  It will help you to get me and hopefully my polishes a little more.  I’ve always wanted to be an artist.  When every other little kid wanted to be a teacher or scientist, there was me, the artist.  Over the years I discovered that if I’m not creating something, my life feels a little empty.  With that in mind I literally draw inspiration from everything imaginable. I love to use movies or shows  as inspiration, it allows me to be a ridiculous fangirl and pass it off as working.  There’s also part of me that sees color combos other people have used in nail art or even in they’re own polishes that inspire me.  Right now I’m in love with all things teal and cobalt colored, and that might work it’s way into my polishes in the near future. So, as you can see, there isn’t going to be one set theme for my polishes, sure I’m in a TV and movie mode right now, but I already have big plans for some collections next year, and the inspiration for those might surprise you.

4.  Which of your polishes do you consider to be your greatest success?

  • There isn’t one color that has been a standout that I can think of, but my Doctor Who collection has been my biggest overall success.  When I created it, I only made enough for five bottles of each color.  I thought I would sell out and that would be that. A great limited edition collection, boy am I glad I changed my mind.  I can’t imagine not having my Doctor Who polishes in my store.  Since then I’ve sold many more than I had planned originally and couldn’t be happier about it’s success. That collection is my biggest store success, but the polishes I’m most happy with are usually ones with color shift involved.  More than anything else, that’s my personal polish kryptonite.  So my personal successes are Anomalous Bloke from my Doctor Who collection and Jarvis from my Gender Benders collection.

Lyn B Designs – Anomalous Bloke

Lyn B Designs – Jarvis

 5.  We all know that perfection doesn’t happen overnight, so can you describe one of your biggest flops?

  • Oh so many flops, I can’t even begin to name them all.  It’s an inherent part of our business. There are three that really come to mind.  I bought a glitter from an unnamed source and tested it for about a week, everything looked fine.  So I put it in a polish to see how it would look.  That glitter reacted with the base I used and puffed up to about twice it’s size.  So I did some swatching and when those glitter hearts dried they curled up into little balls.  So that was a fairly great flop.  My other two are more recent and more alarming.  I bought an orange pigment and was so excited to use it that I went to town.  Everything was going fine and looked great, but I hadn’t tested it on my nails.  So I did and both polishes dyed my nails orange.  After a night of scrubbing with baking soda a peroxide I decided those polishes needed some major formula changes.  I’m hopping a new orange pigment I ordered with give me the same color without the orange nails.

6.  What is one thing our readers would be surprised to know about your creative process?

  • My two most recent collections were spur of the moment, and then they snowballed from there.  My Nightmare Before Christmas collection came about because I was listening to a song from the movie, in the middle of the song, I was hit with the idea to make this collection.  It started out as 20 polishes, but I edited a few out.
  • A lot of my collections start as a random thought and go from there.  When I’m in the middle of creating I often can’t sleep, and so I’m awake at like four in the morning working on polishes in my office.  I’ve found that if I take too much time planning a collection it doesn’t turn out as well. I have to have a plan for things in the rest of my life, but when it comes to polish random works best.

 7.  What are your hopes for the LynBDesigns polish brand in the next 5 years?

  • I hope that in five years I’m still doing this, but on a grander scale.  I know that I’ll always love nail polish, and that I’ll always be creating.  There’s also part of me that thinks “I can make a better polish than that,” every time I see someone raving about a particularly bland polish, so there’s that sense of challenge I get, that if left unconquered it can rule my thoughts until I do something about it.

 8.  Now for a tough, slightly controversial question: What are your feelings about Indie polishes being resold on eBay?

  • My thoughts are that if you buy a polish and it’s not for you, you have the right to sell it. With the difference in monitors and such, it can be hard to tell the true color of a polish.  As far as the polish creators selling on EBay to hike up prices, I don’t agree with that at all.  I know I’m not in this business to make tons of money, I’m in it to make something that I love, and share it with people of like minds.

 9.  Ok enough with the serious questions!  If you were stranded on a deserted island and could on have 3 polishes with you, what would they be and why (color names and brands please?)

  • Asking me to choose just three polishes is going to be agonizing, but here it goes. There are so many polishes from my store that I love to death, but I’m not going to mention those because that list would go on forever.  So, my first choice would have to be butter LONDON’s Wallis.  I love the color, and if I could, I would always have it on hand.  I’m usually quite cheap when it comes to nail polish, so getting Wallis was a huge splurge for me.  My second choice would be Beetle by Hard Candy. I love that it never looks the same twice.  As I said before color shifting polish is my personal Kryptonite.  For the third color I think I have to go with a new color I got.  I found it at Payless, and it’s by a brand called Brash.  The color is Turquoise Twist, and it’s gorgeous.  Since I took my polishes out of the equation, picking wasn’t as hard as I thought.

 10.  And finally, if you were asked to create a berry-colored polish and give it a berry-themed name, what would you call it?

  • I think I would name it Berry Falltastic.  It would be a collection of all the great reds and purples you see in the leaves during fall.  It might even have a little orange and maybe a touch of yellow.  Ooh, I might have to make that color now. Or here’s one my mom helped me with, Duck, Duck, Gooseberry.  It’s a bright peridot green color with loads of pink, purple, and red glitters.

Wow, what a great interview!  I love how Jenna had really though out answers for all of my questions – it made for a really interesting read.  And the fact that she started creating her own polish due to the lack of options in her small town is cool.  And I think the “Berry” themed polishes she came up with were amazing (I would love to see them in her store some day).   If you would like to purchase some of her awesome polishes, and support a great artist, make sure you head over to http://www.etsy.com/shop/LynBDesigns?section_id=10991064 or go to my Links tab.  You can also check out her Facebook page.  And don’t forget to come back here on Sunday when I will be reviewing a Lyn B Designs Polish and I will be hosting a Lyn B Designs polish giveaway!

“Bloody” Fingerprint Manicure

October 21st, 2012

All pictures taken in natural light.

Julep Glenn & OPI Alpine Snow

Hello Berry Patch!  Today I am sharing my second Halloween themed manicure of October with you.  This is another really simple idea that any of you could replicate.  It’s also another idea I got from Pinterest, but once again, there was no link to the actual creator (sorry!).  I have always thought that fingerprints look really cool when you actually take a close look at them – they have such cool patterns.  And of course, when they are done in red, they make a great Halloween decoration, haha.

So I started by painting my nails with two coats of OPIs Alpine Snow – my go to white creme polish.  It gives pretty good opaque coverage, although I think it’s formula isn’t quite as good as a lot of other OPI polishes.  Then, after Alpine Snow had dried, I brought out Julep’s Glenn.  Glenn is a nice shimmery red that has some magenta tendencies.  I basically just painted a little bit on my thumb, did one print on a piece of paper (so it wouldn’t be so blobby on my nail) and then pressed my thumb right on to my nail. The thumbprints came out magnificently!  But to my surprise, I could only get one print on each nail – nail polish dries surprisingly fast on your skin.  And then, of course I sealed it all up with some nice and shiny Seche Vite top coat :)

I really love the end result of this manicure!  It was super easy, totally Halloween appropriate and looks really interesting.  I do slightly wish I would have picked a more “blood” red polish, like Big Apple Red or something, but that’s just me being picky.  And I think you could really create some cool looking abstract nails by using this technique with non-Halloween colors (hopefully I’ll get around to trying that some day).  Well, I hope you enjoyed this mani as much as I do and don’t forget to send in your Halloween manicures for my Halloween Nail Art Contest!

Halloween Jelly Sandwich 2012

This was the free edge wear after 4 days.

OPI Pirouette My Whistle, Zoya Raven, OPI Alpine Snow & Nfu-oh JS01

Happy October Berry Patch!  I have  my first Halloween themed mani of the month for you today.  This was based on something I saw on Pinterest, and the original post was from a Tumblr called Blanket Print Nails (thanks for the inspiration!).  But I didn’t want to straight up copy her design, so I added my own twist to it by making it into a glitter jelly sandwich :)  And I really like this look, because it’s simple and anyone can do it!

A while ago I had bought a couple of jelly polishes from Nfu Oh that I thought would make really interesting and unique jelly sandwiches.  And since those colors were black and grey, I figured October was the perfect month to bring them out.  So I started with a base of Nfu Oh JS-01, a polish from their Jelly Syrup Series.  It was nice and easy to apply and has a great jelly look with one coat – I almost expected it to look grey, but you can definitely tell that it’s black.  Then I applied two coats of OPIs Pirouette My Whistle glitter on top of the jelly.  I love the way Pirouette looks in the bottle as well as on my nails.  Its full of silver micro glitter as well as larger silver hexes.  I had a little bit of trouble getting the larger pieces of glitter where I wanted them, but overall this glitter wasn’t too much trouble to work with.  Then to complete the jelly sandwich (jelly polish, glitter polish, jelly polish) I added one more coat of the black Nfu Oh jelly on top.  I was really happy with the way this turned out, but I wanted to add one more touch to really get that Halloween feel.  So  I did some really simple googly eyes as accents on my ring finger and thumbs.  They are just two white dots of OPIs Alpine Snow and then two dots of Zoya’s Raven on top (created with a dotting tool).

The wear on this manicure had its pros and cons.  The pro was that I didn’t get any chips until about the 6th day of wear.  The con is that I started getting free edge wear on the second day.  But overall, I was really impressed with how well this jelly mani wore.  I hope you are all starting to play around with Halloween looks too – A) because it’s fun and B) because I will be giving the details of my Halloween nail art contest in the next couple of days :)

California “Golden” Bear Manicure

OPI Dating A Royal & Rococo Nail Apparel 24K Gold Leaf Lacquer.

Hello Berry Patch!  So after my failed attempt at a Cal Bears themed mani a couple weeks ago, I wanted redemption!  I still went with something pretty simple in terms of technique, but much more true to the UC Berkeley colors.  And this is now officially my most expensive manicure to date, haha.

Cal’s colors are a darker Blue and Gold.  So this time I used OPI’s Dating a Royal for my blue base.  And even though the color worked out perfectly, I am not a fan of this formula.  It’s almost like a mix between a creme and a jelly polish.  The first coat was extremely thin and streaky, but after the second coat it was opaque.  Then I went with something extravagantly perfect for a blue and gold manicure – my Rococo Nail Apparel real 24K Gold Leaf Lacquer!  What could be more perfect, right?  This is basically a clear topcoat with flakes of gold floating in it.  If you let this polish just sit, all the flakes sink down to the botton.  So I was constantly shaking this polish upside down in between nails.  And there is a lot of fishing required to get those gold flakes out.  But the work is worth it, because it is just so awesome and luxurious.  And of course, when I finally gave up and just wanted to smooth things out with some of the clear, I got tons of gold haha.

I LOVE the way this manicure turned out!  It totally achieved the look I was originally going for – redemption accomplished :)  In terms of wear, the free edges didn’t do too bad.  But I did have two big chunks flake of the side of my thumbs around the 5th day.  Overall it did ok (though not as good as other OPI polishes).  And I don’t know what it was, but I had a bit of a difficult time removing this polish.  Not like you would with a glitter mani – the gold flakes weren’t a problem – it was almost like the clear part of the gold leaf polish was super thick and it took a while for the nail polish remover to eat through it.  So if you feel like treating yourself to something special and golden pick up one of the trendy gold flake topcoats that are out now (Sephora by OPI and Zoya both have one now).  Unfortunately I had been on a wait-list forever for this polish and of course it came in stock right before all the other versions came out in the US :/ (But at least the gold flakes are much larger in this brand and they are 24K instead of 18K – justified right, haha?)
